Organisation: National Youth Development Agency

The NYDA Grant Programme is designed to provide young entrepreneurs with an opportunity to access both financial and non-financial business development support in order to enable them to establish or grow their businesses. The programme will focus on youth entrepreneurs who are at intentional, promising and new stages of enterprise development.

Young people whose business ideas qualify for the grant programme, depending on their individual needs, will also undergo some of the NYDA’s non-financial support services, including:
  • Mentorship
  • The Voucher Programme
  • Market Linkage
  • Entrepreneurship Development Programme
  • Youth Co-operative Development Programme
Qualifying Entrepreneurs/Businesses:
  • The applicant must have attained the age of eighteen(18) years at the time of application;
  • Require the grant for business start-up or growth;
  • Are youth (18-35 years) with necessary skills, experience or; with the potential skill appropriate for the enterprise that they conduct or intend to conduct;
  • Are South African citizens and are resident within the borders of South Africa;
  • Are involved in the day-to-day operation and management of the business;
  • Operate either informally or formally; generally recognised as micro enterprises (e.g. street traders, vendors, emerging enterprises);
  • Have a profit motive and are commercially viable and sustainable;
  • Members of entities should comprise 100% South African youth citizen;
  • Business is operating within the borders of South Africa;
  • Individual entity must have a bank account and or a young person must be assisted to open an account;
  • For cooperatives they must have or be willing to form a group of minimum of 5 persons.
  • Upon approval of grant, if applicant is employed full time, he/she may be required to resign from employment and provide grant officer with proof of resignation;
  • Thresholds do not apply to cooperatives
Specific Threshold Requirements:
Threshold 1 R1 000 – R10 000 (Survivalist Business)
  • Complete application form;
  • No business plan required;
  • No business experience required;
  • Business does not have to be registered;
  • Must present a viable business idea;
  • Must have a bank account;
  • Proof of supplier banking details
Threshold 2 R10 001 – R50 000 (Start Up)
  • Complete business plan template or submit a business plan;
  • Must be a formal registered business;
  • Must have a business bank account;
  • Must have skill(s) required to operate the business;
  • Must create or sustain at least 1 additional job;
  • Must have been in business for a minimum of 6 months;
  • Must create or sustain at least 1 job (excluding owner);
  • Proof of supplier banking details
Threshold 3 R50 001 – R100 000 (Growth)
  • Existing business – formally registered;
  • Must be tax compliant;
  • Business plan required;
  • Must have been in operation for a minimum period of twelve(12) months;
  • Provide management accounts(business records);
  • Proof of supplier banking details;
  • Must create or sustain at least 2 jobs (excluding owner)
Specific Exclusions:
  • Enterprises that require less than R1 000;
  • Partial funding, co-funding or funding towards a deposit for a loan from another lending establishment;
  • Contract finance and bridging finance;
  • Business is owned by NYDA staff members, Board Committee Members or Member of the Accounting Authority;
  • Where a relative of a staff member applies for a Grant the said individual shall recuse himself or herself from all pre and post approval activities;
  • Where the staff, immediate family of the staff at that branch is a shareholder/associate or partner of the business for which the Grant is required;
  • Fall within the gambling, gaming or sex industries, and/or operates illegal activities;
  • Tobacco as a primary income generator;
  • Alcohol as a primary income generator;
  • Are investment trusts or venture capital/private equity funds;
  • Require finance to substitute an existing financier;
  • Require NYDA to issue a guarantee in favour of a third party;
  • Require seed capital for research and development;
  • Shareholders/members are natural personas who lack contractual capacity by virtue of – being of unsound mind, have a record of fraud and/or corruption, where the owner/applicant is attending school other than tertiary and/or pyramid sales schemes.
  • NYDA shall not provide grant funding for vehicles.
